Call for Volunteers!
03/03/2009

The Maryland Film Festival seeks volunteers! Have fun, earn free screening vouchers and be part of the excitement in Downtown, Baltimore May 7-10, 2009. At the 11th Annual Festival, we hope to have more volunteers than ever to reflect the diverse, eclectic community of film lovers in Baltimore and Maryland. There are many positions available: Box Office, Tent Village, Filmmakers Lounge, Theatre Ushers, and more! At every turn guests from around the world will be greeted by you, ambassadors from the festival to the community. Please also recruit your friends and family! As incentive, each four (4) hour shift worked (and you can work as much as you'd like), you earn a free screening voucher or $8 toward merchandise. You are invited to a special "Volunteers Only" screening of one of the most popular movies and at your shift, we'll provide MFF T-shirts, water and light snacks. Praise for Trouble the Water
10/30/2008

Friends of the Festival Praise

from our most recent film event,

Trouble the Water

“It was fab…Hope the film gets legs and stays around awhile.”  Meadow Washington

“LOVED IT! I’ve been thinking about Kim and Scott for the last two days...I’m sending it out to friends as well. Big thanks to the filmmakers for coming out and hearing their side first hand. I was really curious, even three years later, to experience Katrina in way that was not portrayed in the media. This hit the heart of it...” – Ande

"Trouble the Water was a powerful documentary that painfully illustrated the neglect and ineptitude of the government (local, state and federal) to fairly aid their citizens…Seeing utterly unprepared, common people cope and survive under those horrendous circumstances was the saving grace of what could have been a very depressing documentary. It was also great to see how the filmmakers salvaged their failed first attempt to cover the event. When a wall is put before you; dig under, go around or scale over it! Keep the good work coming Maryland Film Festival.” – David Martin

“I really appreciate being able to see this at a free screening, because I cannot afford to go to full price movies to see nearly the number of films I would like to see.  And I would not want to have missed this.”

Trouble the Water was fabulous!  It was very layered and nuanced; it was not simply ‘another Katrina story’ The leads, Kim and Scott, gave the movie great life, and while Tia and Carl are incredibly talented had they not happened upon these stars they would have made a very different film.  This is a must see for its artistry and execution and for its humanity and message.” – Brandy Washington

HAMILTON

Hosted by Director Matt Porterfield

Dir. Matt Porterfield, 2006

Over the course of two Baltimore summer days Lena, an unwed teenage mother, tries to connect with Joe, the father of her child.  She is living with his family while he has moved out on his own.  In director Matthew Porterfield’s hands, this simple story takes on complexity and richness. Shot in long takes without much dialogue, the film takes on the feel of a poem and it is reminiscent of the contemplative films of Terrance Malick and most recent films of Gus Van Sant.  Screened at the 2006 Maryland Film Festival.

Tickets are available the day of the screening at Falvey Hall / Brown Center / MICA
